La agenda de lunes, el 2 de noviembre

¡Hola hola, clase!  Hope you had a wonderful couple of weeks!!  ¡Here is our presentation that we used in class today!  (¡Usamos esta presentación hoy!)

  • Calentamiento
    • ¡Saquen ustedes sus CUADERNOS y SAMs!
      • Notebook out! SAM out!
    • Go to your warm-up page, and write the title “Calentamiento."
    • Write down and answer the following questions:
      • ¿Cómo te llamas?
      • ¿Cómo estás?
      • ¿Qué día es hoy?
      • ¿Cuál es la fecha?
        • IF YOU WEREN'T HERE, and need to review:
          • ¿Cómo te llamas? → What is your name?
            • Me llamo __SPANISH NAME__.
          • ¿Cómo estás? → How are you?
            • Estoy __bien/mal/así-así/regular/enfermo/a__.
          • ¿Qué día es hoy? → What day is today?
            • Hoy es lunes.
          • 4. ¿Cuál es la fecha?  → What is the date?
            • Es el cinco de octubre.
  • El juego de béisbol
    • Baseball is extremely popular, especially in Puerto Rico, and the Latin American countries of the Caribbean (like Cuba and the Dominican Republic)!
    • So, we're going to play, too!
      • 3 outs = no more tries that day!
      • Doing awesome stuff in class = 1 base
      • 4 bases = 1 home run = 1 point that day/inning!
      • 3 strikes = 1 out
    • Plus, there are only 6 innings, so we can potentially earn PAT every 7 days!
  • HOMEWORK TONIGHT: Expectations for proof you studied
    • If you haven’t yet, please label each section or each word:
      • What you already know (with a checkmark or :D!)
      • What you remember but need to review (**)
        • If you just need to work on SPELLING, you can write SP
      • What you haven’t learned or don’t remember learning (use a ?? or other symbol)
    • Make a flashcard for every word with **, SP, or ??
  • Understanding the language learning journey
    • Language learning has a very high abandonment rate. A mere 4% of students embarking on language courses in schools achieve a basic level of fluency after three years. 96% fail to become fluent, and many quit completely!
    • People almost always wrongly conclude two things from this:
      • Myth 1) Learning languages is hard.
      • Myth 2) Other people (but not them) are naturally good at languages.
    • One of the biggest reasons cited for abandoning is that students don't feel any sense of progression -- it’s hard to feel like you’re getting BETTER!   Also, most students from the US, even that have an “A” in Spanish, can visit a Spanish speaking country and they can't even have basic conversations. People largely give up because they had the wrong expectations.
    •  So let's bust some myths:
      • 1) Learning a language isn't hard. It just takes a long time.
      • 2) Everyone is naturally good at languages.
    • You already learned one, remember?
      • You may have just forgotten how long it took.

  • Learning Spanish is like mountain climbing
    • It's steeper at first, so learning in middle school takes determination
    • But, the Spanish fluency mountain is one ANYONE can climb, provided she is willing to put in the effort and time to keep going a bit at a time!
    • So, where are you?
      • Can you hang out with me for the night at base camp, or do you need to run to catch up?
    • Do you have the tools you need?
